Projects

The Irv Alten Foundation has undertaken some Major Initiatives in support of handball. Providing courts where handball can be played is one way the Foundation has helped advance the sport.

Portland One Wall Courts

In 2014, Portland’s one wall handball contingent had increased in numbers such that they outgrew the courts located in Laurelhurst Park. In addition, the courts being used were not regulation size. After finding a suitable location, the group worked with the Principal at Roseway Heights to create three new courts on the back of their gym. Since the courts were finished, they have received extensive use, and host an annual tournament every August.

The Irv Alten Foundation developed three one-wall courts at Roseway Heights School in NE Portland.

Salem Three Wall Courts

In 2017, we were approached by the Salem Handball Club, in regards to, refurbishing the courts Chemeketa Community College. Although playable, the surface was in poor shape and you could not play with the small handball. Working with Salem crew, we met with the management at the school and began the process of getting permission. Although taking almost a year to accomplish, the courts were completed in the fall of 2018. Players are now awaiting good weather to play.
